Background of the Study
Street trading is a vibrant economic activity that sustains urban life, yet in Benin City it also contributes to significant traffic congestion (Okoro, 2023). In Oredo, the high concentration of informal street vendors in busy commercial areas often leads to obstructed roadways and inefficient traffic flow (Ibrahim, 2024). Recent studies reveal that while street trading boosts local economies, it also creates challenges for urban mobility and public safety (Eze, 2023). The dynamics of this phenomenon are further complicated by inadequate urban planning and a lack of designated trading zones (Adenuga, 2025). This study evaluates the dual role of street trading as an economic driver and a factor in traffic congestion, examining its impact on commuter experience and urban infrastructure (Chisom, 2023). The analysis aims to provide recommendations for integrating informal trade with modern traffic management strategies.

Statement of the Problem
In Benin City, street trading in Oredo is a major contributor to urban traffic congestion, yet its implications for traffic management and commuter safety are under-researched (Oluwaseun, 2023). The informal nature of street trading complicates regulatory efforts, leading to uncoordinated market setups that impede traffic flow (Adebayo, 2024). This lack of empirical data hinders effective policy formulation to balance economic benefits with urban mobility needs (Ifeanyi, 2023). This study seeks to fill this research gap by examining the influence of street trading on traffic congestion and proposing integrated management solutions.

Objectives of the Study:

  • To assess the extent of street trading’s impact on traffic congestion.
  • To evaluate the economic benefits of street trading against its urban challenges.
  • To propose strategies for harmonizing informal trade and traffic management.

Research Questions:

  • How does street trading contribute to traffic congestion in Oredo?
  • What are the economic benefits and urban challenges associated with street trading?
  • Which regulatory measures can improve traffic flow while supporting street vendors?

Research Hypotheses:

  • H1: Street trading significantly contributes to urban traffic congestion.
  • H2: Economic benefits of street trading are offset by its impact on traffic flow.
  • H3: Integrated regulatory measures can reduce congestion without harming economic activity.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it explores the interplay between informal economic activities and urban mobility. The findings will offer critical insights for urban planners and policymakers to balance economic vibrancy with efficient traffic management, fostering sustainable urban development (Onyema, 2024; Eze, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to evaluating the influence of street trading on traffic congestion in Benin City, Oredo Local Government Area, Edo State, and does not extend to formal retail sectors.

Definitions of Terms:

  • Street Trading: The practice of selling goods and services on public streets.
  • Traffic Congestion: Overcrowding on road networks that impedes vehicular movement.
  • Urban Infrastructure: The basic physical systems and services in urban areas.
